Thanks for your thoughtful comment. I just want to clarify that I did enjoy the film. (I wouldn't have spent so much time writing about it otherwise!) I just meant that when I saw scenes of places I was familiar with, I found it a little bit embarrassing as I know them in a more mundane context — I mean, one of the places is really close to where I work lol. But these scenes didn't stop me from enjoying the movie as a whole. I mean, one of the reasons I wanted to watch the film in the first place was to see Paris on screen. I've got a friend who grew up on a street that appears in Black Panther, and when he saw it he found it super awkward. But that particular kind of cringe doesn't mean that he didn't like the film; it's just that it was really surreal to see it on screen. I guess moments like these instantly break one's suspension of disbelief, but it doesn't necessarily mean that you can't appreciate the spectacle. It just means that you relate to the film differently from someone who doesn't personally know the places. And so when I talk about cringe, I don't really mean it in a negative sense. It's more like while you're watching John Wick 4, you feel cringe along with some other, more positive emotions like exhilaration. And yeah, I totally agree that films should take creative liberties with locations. I've worked on commercials in the past, and it's always interesting to see how much thought goes into production. I pretty much believe that filmmaking is the art of lying, but I don't have any qualms with it. It's really just about depicting reality through a certain lens. And I get the impression that the John Wick series doesn't even try to be realistic anyway, but bases itself entirely on the tropes of action movies and video games, and so it's pretty much two steps removed from reality as it is.
