Thanks for your comment, Brenda! It's great that you take the opportunity to practice your French and Spanish despite the fear of making mistakes.

I think it's normal to want to practice a language with a native speaker when you get the chance. I've noticed a lot of French people want to practice their English on me when they find out I'm a native speaker.

At the same time, it can get pretty annoying for me personally as I want to assimilate into the culture as much as possible and their speaking English somewhat prevents me from doing so, especially if we're in public and other people can hear English being spoken. My French is usually also a lot better than their English, and they would have trouble understanding my accent anyway, meaning that if I were to speak English, I'd have to slow down, adapt my vocabulary and adjust the way I speak to such an extent that the conversation starts to feel like work.

I'm happy to have conversations with people who don't speak English natively, but when I'm in France, I like to stick to French in much the same way that a French person overseas would probably prefer to practice their English than speak French with someone who doesn't speak it natively. So even if a French person insists on speaking English with me, I insist on speaking French back to them, creating a kind of game of chicken lol
