I don’t actually watch many movies. Until John Wick 4, the last movie I watched in a cinema was The French Dispatch. I do watch films on streaming but I just have trouble focusing for long periods of time, and I usually spend more time watching football (soccer). With regards to tropes and things, I don’t think the use of them is necessarily due to a lack of imagination or the rise of streaming services. I think it’s mainly due to studios being incredibly risk-averse. Studios are always afraid of making novel films because they don’t know if they’ll make bank. It’s much safer to go the tried-and-true route because you can almost guarantee that a film with a familiar storyline or belonging to a franchise will have an audience. I think this phenomenon predates the rise of streaming platforms, but it’s certainly become more pronounced over the last decade. I think that there are lots of original films being made but they tend to be lower-budget. As the potential financial consequences are lower, the suits aren’t as afraid of taking risks on unfamiliar stories. I think that Everything Everywhere All At Once benefited from not being made by a major studio. The Daniels got away with doing anything they wanted, as A24 seem pretty open to new concepts. I think there are lots of really talented young filmmakers out there but they just need backing
