Black Lives Matter in the City of Lights (Part 2)
Photos of an anti-racism protest in Paris on 13th June 2020
In the wake of George Floyd's murder, anti-racism protests swept the globe, including in Paris where I was living at the time.
A Black Lives Matter protest had taken place at Concorde on 6th June 2020, and that was soon followed by another demonstration — this time at Place de la République on 13th June 2020.
In contrast to the initial protest, the atmosphere here was far more tense. Counter-protestors from the far right had put up a banner on the rooftop of a nearby apartment, provoking the ire of everyone in the square. Riot police also seemed more willing to use tear gas on protestors, even though the vast, vast majority of attendees had come in peace.
Here are some photos I took at the demonstration.
